Tina Brown and a roster of A-listers honor those who make a difference at the Women in the World summit 

The event launched by Brown will open with Hillary Clinton and Meryl Streep and pay tribute to activists, leaders and visionaries the world over

The three-day Women in the World Summit kicking off Thursday honors heroines from the war zones of Syria, Congo and Ukraine, many who are risking their lives every day.

Let’s see the Kardashians keep up with that.

“These women are the great rock stars of our time,” says Tina Brown, the media mogul behind the summit. “I wish my daughter wasn’t spending time thinking of Kim Kardashian or Rihanna. I wish [girls] could think about these amazing women instead.”

That’s odd talk from the former editor of Vanity Fair — who certainly fed the daily beast with oodles of celebrity gush. But the success of her first Women in the World Summit in 2010 changed her.

“I didn’t expect this to become an annual event,” she says. “It was sheer editorial and journalistic interest in believing these stories ought to be told.”

The empowerment forum has swelled from 300 guests to the 2,500 attendees and 44 million tweeters following last year’s summit.

This week’s lineup at Lincoln Center includes Ukrainian protester Ruslana Lyzhychko, world leaders like Queen Rania of Jordan, dissidents like Pussy Riot and songwriter Angélique Kidjo, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who advocates for women’s rights in Africa. Hillary Clinton and A-listers like Meryl Streep open the conference on Thursday night....
